Okorocha’s Senatorial Victory Suffers Setback

Amby Uneze in Owerri

The declaration of Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State as winner of Imo West senatorial district seat in last Saturday’s election yesterday suffered a setback as the Returning Officer, Prof. I. I. Ibeawuchi of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has said he announced the result under duress.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jones Onyereri had accused the governor of holding the returning officer hostage, and persuading him to declare the result of the senatorial district.

Ibeawuchi on regaining freedom from the hostage in Orlu, spoke at the INEC headquarters in Owerri, on how he was forced to sign the result, which he had already refused to declare based on some anomalies he discovered.

According to him, “I had been in the bush for the past 48 hours because they wanted me to declare the result.”

The PDP had raised the alarm over Okorocha’s alleged “primitive” way of taking the returning officer hostage to announce the result in his favour.
