As the state government last Friday paid part of the accumulated leave bonus, local government workers in Ekiti State have suspended their one month strike, saying they did so in the state interest.

The workers, who acted under the auspices of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), confirmed yesterday that they had started receiving alerts on payment of some arrears of their leave bonus.

NULGE also commended the state Governor, Kayode Fayemi, for what they called his “prompt intervention” in ensuring the payment of the cash.

The decision to suspend the strike was taken at an emergency NULGE State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend.

A communique suspending the strike was signed by the state NULGE President, Mr. Bunmi Ajimoko, and Secretary, Mr. Aleru Suleiman.

The statement read: “NULGE chapter of Ekiti State held an emergency meeting on October 21, 2018, and resolved that since the money approved as part payment of 2016 leave bonus has dropped in various local government accounts and some staff members have started receiving their payment, the union wishes to suspend the over one month strike today (yesterday).

“All members of the union are hereby directed to resume full activities at their various local government councils, boards and commissions from today (yesterday).

“NULGE uses this medium to thank all its members for their patience, perseverance and solidarity during the course of our struggle.

“Finally, the union wishes to appreciate the government of Fayemi for his prompt intervention.”
