The Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has commended the performance of Osemudiame Legbedion, an indigene of the state, who emerged second best in the 2018 Channels Book Club’s Literature Prize, a National Essay Competition organised by Channels Television in collaboration with the Sharjah Book Authority, an agency of the Sharjah Government in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki said Osemudiame’s feat in the competition tells of the can-do spirit of the average Edo person wherever they find themselves.

According to the Presenter and Producer, Channels Book Club, Olakunle Kasumu, “Osemudiame Legbedion, a Senior Secondary 3 student who hails from Edo State, emerged second best in the 2018 Channels Book Club’s Literature Prize, Season 3, with participants drawn from secondary schools in the six geo-political zones of the country.

Kasumu said the participants were asked to read a book titled: ‘And After Many Days by Jowhor Ile’ from which they were asked to write an essay to review the book.

The competition is aimed at encouraging students in secondary schools cultivate reading culture and test their comprehension and writing skills.

According to the governor, “I am thrilled by the performance of Osemudiame Legbedion in the Channels Book Club’s Literature Prize competition, organised by Channels Television. Her performance goes to show that the future holds a lot of promise for the state if children have access to quality education which encourages reading and writing.”

Governor Obaseki said his administration will continue to provide the needed support for children in the state to become globally competitive and match their peers anywhere in the globe.

According to him, his administration would not relent in the ongoing reforms to reposition the education sector especially the basic education sub-sector, to improve access to quality education in public schools.

The governor said the reforms would also provide policy directions for private investors in the sector to ensure that they do not fall short of acceptable standards in the state.

The winners of the Channels Book Club Prize for Literature Season 3 will be taken to the Sharjah International Book Fair, the third largest international book fair after the Frankfurt Book Fair and London Book Fair, with over 2 million visitors. The winners also got a book grant of 50 Dollars each, courtesy of Farafina Books.
