The Katsina State Government has distributed 283 bags of maize and rice, worth N4 million to 2,000 women in Tafsir centres across its three senatorial zones of Katsina, Funtua and Daura in order to assuage their sufferings during Ramadan fasting and Sallah celebration.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Badiya Hassan Mashi, during the closing ceremony of the state annual Ramadan Tafsir in the three senatorial zones.

Dr. Mashi stressed that the gesture was conceived as part of the state government’s larger growth inclusivity and social policy aimed at improving the living conditions of women, children and youths across the zones.

“I am highly optimistic that this gesture would motivate you to support the government and gear up to be good ambassadors by being patriotic through the exhibitions of support, loyalty and cooperation,” she said.

She noted that the state government under the leadership of Governor Aminu Bello Masari has empowered thousands of women economically to enable them pull out of the poverty level and become self-reliant enough to stand up against any abuse.

While urging the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the foodstuffs, the women affairs commissioner said the state would continue to initiate policies geared towards enhancing the socio-economic wellbeing of the masses.

Dr. Badiya, who described women as ambassadors of peace, appealed to them to ensure the proper upbringing of their wards by monitoring their activities and movements.

The commissioner, however, said her ministry is committed to sensitising women and the youth on the dangers of drug abuse and other social vices for the speedy development of the society, calling on them to ensure personal and environmental hygiene in their homes.

She urged community leaders, parents and guardians to crosscheck the sales of drugs in pharmaceutical stores within their communities to prevent the selling of drugs to children.

According to her, “Communities should be conscious of who is opening drug store within their vicinities. We are also calling on schools to check their students while they are in school.”

The event was climaxed with the presentation of an award of excellence to Governor Masari and the commissioner Mashi.
