A total of 107 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) operating the Contributory Health Scheme in Delta State have been approved for renovation as the state government seeks to strengthen its heathcare machinery for better service delivery.

This was one of the decisions taken at Tuesday’s State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting held at the Government House, Asaba and presided over by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Speaking at the end of the meeting, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, noted that the approval was in line with the determination of the state government to continue to provide the people with a better lease of life by bringing improved healthcare services to them.

Moreover, the EXCO approved the establishment of Oduke Secondary School, Asaba, to take care of the educational needs of people living within the Ibusa/Ogwashiuku Road axis of the state capital.

Also approved was the installation of 200 Watts LED street lights from Amukpe/NTA roundabout to Total Filling Station at Okirighwre junction, Sapele in Delta Central district.

In addition, the reactivation of Airfield Ground Lightning Systems at the Asaba International Airport and the renovation of the existing transformer-powered street lights in Warri and Effurun metropolis were approved.

Meanwhile, the new June 12 Democracy Day declared by President Muhammadu Buhari was not observed in Delta State on Tuesday as civil servants were at their usual duty posts while government business went on as usual.

Some of the residents simply told THISDAY that they were in their respective places of work because the state government did not issue any directive declaring a work-free day in line with the presidential pronouncement.

Others said it was ridiculous to observe another democracy day holiday two weeks after a nationwide public holiday to mark Democracy Day on May 29, 2018, adding that they did not expect the states to comply with the new date till probably next year.
