No fewer than eight persons, including seven members of one family on Sunday died in an auto-crash that occurred at the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The number of casualties at the scene of the accident made other commuters to abruptly suspend their trips as they wept uncontrollably describing the day as a ‘Black Sunday’.

The accident occurred at about 11am, according to eye witness account.

ThisDay checks revealed that the accident occurred when a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number Enu 75YY said to be belonging to a popular transportation company (names withheld), allegedly collided with a Toyota Carina E with registration No CM 960 FKJ, said to be conveying the family.

All members of the family died on the spot.

“The Hiace Bus was on high speed and while he was dogging potholes in the already collapsed Onyeama axis of Enugu – Onitsha road, lost control and collided with the Toyota Carina, killing the seven occupants on the spot”, one of the witnesses narrated.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the accident.

Sadly, the family of seven travelling with the Toyota Carina E Car were confirmed dead and their dead bodies have been deposited at the Parklane hospital mortuary,” he said.

“Meanwhile, four other people that sustained various degrees of injury are still receiving medical attention at the Parklane hospital”, he said.
