The Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF) has expressed its gratitude to the Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode, for fulfilling his N20 million pledge to the Super Eagles B team for finishing as runners-up during the last Championship of African Nation (CHAN) in Morocco early this year.
The NFF, which was represented by its First Vice President, Seyi Akinwunmi, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, described Ambode as an amiable Governor, who had done a lot for sports in his state and Nigeria.
He stated that he was with the team in Morocco when the governor made the promise and expressed happiness that he had fulfilled the pledge.
“We at the NFF are extremely happy that the governor has made good his promise,†he said.
He thanked the governor on behalf of the NFF and urged others to emulate his kind gesture.
The Lagos State Government on Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium fulfilled a pledge of N20 million to the Super Eagles B team that finished second at the Championship of African Nation (CHAN) in Morocco early this year.
The Eagles lost 4-0 to Morocco in the finals but were deemed to have done enough to deserve N20million largesse from Lagos State.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of his teammates, Ajiboye said the governor’s kind gesture would spur the players to do better in future.
“I must commend Governor Ambode for the love he has shown to the team, though I am not surprised that he has redeemed his pledge because he is a sports-loving governor who is doing a lot to motivate athletes,†Ajiboye said.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the Lagos State Spots Commission (LSSC), Dr Kweku Tandoh, who presented the cheque on behalf of the Governor, commended the Eagles for finishing second in Morocco despite the odds.
Tandoh stated that the gesture was to appreciate the players for their good run at the tournament and also encourage them to do better in future.
“In line with Governor Ambode’s disposition, he made a pledge to the team in Morocco and he is finally releasing the money to the team through the LSSC,†Tandoh noted.
