NCP: Fawehinmi Would’ve Rejected Buhari’s Award

The National Conscience Party (NCP) Thursday hailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day.

The Lagos State Chairman of the party, Mr. Fatai Ibu-Owo, praised the president in an interview with journalists in Lagos, adding that the declaration was apt.

He said the June 12, 1993, presidential election was adjudged the most peaceful and fairest in Nigeria, adding that the will of the citizens has prevailed.

He added that the presumed winner of the election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, was a symbol of democracy and justice.
The chairman, however, said that NCP has nothing to celebrate in the federal government’s decision to give a posthumous award to its late founder, Chief Gani Fawehinmi.

While declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, Buhari also decided to give Fawehinmi a national award of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

Ibu-Owo said Fawehinmi would have rejected the award if alive.

Also reacting, the Chairman of the Centre for Anti-Corruption of Open Leadership (CACOL), Mr. Debo Adeniran, described the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day as a welcome development.

He said the election was the best, freest and fairest so far in the country.

Adeniran commended Buhari for the declaration which he said successive governments failed to do.
