The Maserati Alfieri has been an on-again-off-again halo product that the somewhat troubled brand has struggled to bring to market, but it now seems as though the sports coupe is finally on the way.
Fiat Chrysler presented its five-year product strategy during a special presentation in Italy today, which included a concrete plan to release the Alfieri. The production Alfieri will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain, all-wheel drive and a lightweight aluminum spaceframe. This recipe will enable the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph in around two seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 186 mph, or 300 km/h. It will also feature full torque vectoring and active aerodynamics.
The Alfieri will also be offered in coupe and cabriolet form, however it’s not yet clear if these two models will be launched alongside one another, or if the cabriolet will be launched sometime after the coupe.
Maserati first showed the Alfieri in concept form at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show with the intent of putting it into production in 2016. It has kept on pushing the Alfieri’s release back as more important products like the Levante took priority, but it now seems as though the sports coupe is on track for a release in 2020 or 2021. It’s named after Alfieri Maserati, one of the five Maserati brothers, and was originally intended to mark the 100th anniversary of the brand back in 2014.
Maserati also plans on launching a new Ghibli, a new Levante and a new Quattroporte between now and 2022. The automaker will also launch a second crossover that will slot beneath the Levante in its lineup. All future Maserati vehicles will feature some sort of electrification, likely either 48V or plug-in, and Level 3 autonomous driving capability.
The GranTurismo and GranTurismo Cabriolet will eventually be killed off to make way for the Alfieri.
