Community policing will help to mop up unlicensed firearms in civilian possession, remove suspicion and foster cordial relationship between the police and the public, the Inspector General of Police (IG) Ibrahim Idris has said.
The IG stated this Friday during the graduation ceremony of The Tactical Leadership and Command Course, held at the Police Staff College in Jos, Plateau State.
Represented by the Commandant of the college, AIG Dorothy Gimba, Idris said: “The story of policing the Nigeria state cannot be complete without reference to community policing which creates platforms for the police to interface with their host communities and relevant stakeholders to seek collective solutions to security challenges.
“It gives ownership to the citizens and solves a host of problems which include reconciliation of communities and groups with their difference and also identify criminal elements.
“It builds trust and guarantee free flow of information which assists the police to have seamless operations, availing the police the opportunity to educate and sensitise the public on the need to promptly report suspicious movements, strange persons around their localities and respect existing laws.â€
Earlier, Gimba had lauded the IG for availing the college the adequate support it requires to thrive.
She said: “Interestingly, the Police Staff College with the support of the Force management team under the leadership of the IGP Ibrahim Idris has witnessed significant transformations in the area of academic and infrastructure.â€
