About 21 pro-Biafran activists were wednesday morning arrested by a combined team of security operatives made up of the Department of State Service (DSS), anti-terrorism squad, anti-riot policemen, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in front of Enugu State Government House.
The activists who were identified as members of the Biafra Zionists Federation, (BZF), led by their self-acclaimed President, Benjamin Onwuka, were arrested as they made attempt to take over Enugu Government House.
The group had stormed the Government House as early as seven am with Biafran flags.
THISDAY checks that the group had earlier vowed to be at the Government House on May 30 for the purpose of declaration of Biafra Republic.
It was gathered that upon their arrival at the Government House gate, they were rounded up by security operatives.
While Onwuka and about twenty other members of the group were arrested, others reportedly took to their heels.
The Deputy Leader of the group, Ambrose Ugwu, who confirmed the arrest, said the South-east governors would be held responsible for whatever happened to their members.
“Peace loving zionists were today treated like common criminals by the police, who were doing the bidding of South-east governors. They beat our members, including our commander, like criminals.
“What happened today is very condemnable. We hold South-east governors responsible. There is a collaborating among the five of them to crush Biafra agitators.
“But we are not going to be cowed. We are giving them ultimatum to release them immediately. Failure to do so, they will have the United States and other of our international allies to contend with,†Ugwu boasted.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ebere Amaraizu said he was working on an official statement and will soon make it available to the media.
