As part of its reforms and repackaging strategies, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has approved a new constitution and manifesto to put it in good stead for the 2019 elections.
The party at its National Executive meeting held yesterday in Abuja unanimously adopted a new constitution that seeks to restructure its affairs.
Among some new innovations that the SDP sought to introduce include the establishment of Speakers for the youth and women parliaments to replace the office of national youth leader and women leader respectively.
Speaking to THISDAY in an interview shortly after the NEC meeting of the SDP, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana said that the party has also approved a manifesto that seeks to address critical problem of security, economy and infrastructural development in the country.
“Today’s NEC meeting essentially was to approve the revised constitution of the party because the party is growing and there is a lot of movement people into the party and we want to have a robust constitution that will accommodate this growth and also to have a clear sense of political party management.
“A new constitution has just been approved and we are very delighted with it because it has created a directorate for the party administration, two parliaments, one for the youths and the other for the women.
“The idea of creating the youths and women’s parliaments is enable the party engage the important segment of the society in a very robust manner. To mobilise women is very serious work and so instead of having a woman leader or you leader, you now have a Speaker for the women parliament and that of the youth parliament.†he said.
Gana also said that has developed a very good manifesto that has addressed the country’s needs in a very comprehensive and pragmatic manner.
