The Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike has called on Rivers children to take their education seriously to be responsible citizens in the future.
Addressing them during the 2018 Children’s Day celebration at Isaac Boro Park, Port Harcourt, she said education is key to their progress in the society.
“Once you get an education, everything will find its place because you will be empowered to be responsible citizens. You need to be careful and mindful of the friends you keep. This is because evil communication corrupts good manners. Not everyone has a right to come into your space.”
The governor’s wife prayed for God’s blessing on all Rivers children as they make progress in life. “God will establish you and you will not die before your time. You will live long to fulfil all your days and everything that God has planned for you to achieve.”
To ensure that children are more responsible across the state and alive to their responsibilities, she said Rivethics Clubs will be introduced in schools, adding that children are special gifts from God and must be nurtured for the good of the society.
“Children should be celebrated and on a day like this, we create awareness on the importance of children, their rights, their responsibilities, their education and their general welfare.”
Nyesom-Wike said it is because of the importance of children that the United Nations and African Union outlined principles that will aid their protection and development.
The Children’s Day celebration featured lectures by motivational speakers and the distribution of life changing books to the children. Other highlights include parade and cultural dances by schools.
The Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Damiete Herbert Miller said Children’s Day celebration is an opportunity to highlight the importance of children to the society.
