Apparently worried by the incessant clashes between farmers and herders in some parts of the country, Katsina state government has concluded arrangements to commence the re-demarcation and beaconing of stock routes across the state in order to prevent clashes.
The routes to be re-demarcated include both local and international ones, which passes through the state to other neighbouring countries.
The state Standing Committee Chairman on improvement of relationship farmers and herdsmen, Alhaji Abdullahi Lawal K/Sauri, told journalists in Katsina that the exercise was aimed at fostering smooth passage of pastoralists and prevention of farmers/herdsmen clashes, which had become a thing of the past in the state.
He disclosed that 7,240 beacons would be erected across 905km of stock routes already earmarked by the committee in the first phase of the exercise, which is expected to be completed in six weeks.
“The re-demarcation and beaconing will cover some selected cattle routes in nine local government areas of Baure, Ingawa, Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Danmusa, Kafur, Faskari, Zangoâ€, the committee chairman added.
K/Sauri reaffirmed that the committee under his watch was soliciting for the cooperation of the general public, particularly those who live or have farmlands in the areas to be affected by the exercise.
According to him, the unflinching efforts made by Governor Aminu Bello Masari in tackling insecurity headlong had restored peace between farmers and herdsmen in the state.
“Following the stringent measures taken by the state government under the leadership of Governor Aminu Bello Masari, there is relative peace between farmers and herdsmen in the stateâ€, he said.
