Ahead of next year’s presidential election, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expressed its preference for someone from the younger generation to fly its flag.

In what seemed like a foreclosure for politicians of the older generation, the National Secretary of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, said the party would be aligning with the position of majority of Nigerians in its choice of presidential candidate.

“We will be looking for someone who understands the feelings of the larger segment of Nigerians which is the younger population. SDP is working hard on this and will ensure that it conducts a transparent primary to select our presidential candidate. We believe that person will be someone who has age on his side, understands the challenges we are facing and is ready to unite the country to toe the path of greatness,” he said.

As part of preparations for the next year’s election, Gabam said the party will be launching a new constitution and its manifesto soon.

He said the party is worried about the level of abuses of human rights and impunity going in the country warning that such a situation, if not checked may throw the country into anarchy and jeopardized the 2019 general election.

He also urged the Federal Government to rise to its responsibilities and stop the spate of killings and insecurity in the land.

“There is need for the government of the day to ensure that the 2019 elections are transparent and that Nigerians are assured that their lives and properties will be protected,” he said.
The SDP scribe also bemoaned the level of unemployment in the country which according to him is alarming and may become a threat to peace and harmony in the country if not urgently arrested.
