APC Congress: Uncertainty in Enugu as Factions Refuse to Shift Ground

By Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu

The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State continued to manifest at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, venue of the party’s state Congress on Saturday as the major gladiators refused to sheathe their swords.

The two factions led by Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, and the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, had conducted parallel ward and local government congresses in the build up to the state congress.

Checks by THISDAY revealed that the two camps resolved Friday night to come together and conduct a single state congress.

However, as at the time of filing this report Saturday, the exercise had not taken off as the congress committee had a hard time in deciding who should supply the list of delegates to be accredited.

Even the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed DamMallam, and the state Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) who arrived at about 11am could not change the situation as supporters from both factions took over the stadium chanting solidarity songs in support of their benefactors.

But while the delay continued, notable chieftains of the party including former Senate President Ken Nnamani, former governor Sullivan Chime, the party’s National Vice-Chairman Emma Eneukwu, VON DG Okechukwu and former Gombe State military administrator Joe Orji had already arrived the venue.

The SSA to the President on Justice Reform, Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku, arrived and left after a couple of minutes.

Foreign Affairs Minister Onyeama was still being expected.
