The wife of a former governor of Kano State and former Education Minister, Hajiya Halima Ibrahim Shekarau, Wednesday assisted over 2,000 physically challenged, needy, widows and aged women with food items to alleviate their suffering during Ramadan.

The distribution of the items took place at the residence of the former governor located along Mundubawa road in Kano metropolis.

Speaking to reporters shortly after the donation, Hajia Shekarau with the title Garkuwar Nakasassu, said the gesture was an annual event that has being ongoing for years.

“We have been doing it for a very long time and we hope to sustain it till the end of our lives. We are approaching Ramadan fasting, no matter how little the donation is, it will impact on the lives of the beneficiaries,” she said.

Shekarau said apart from the food items donated to the vulnerables, a free feeding programme has been arranged at Mammbayya house to cater for the less privileged throughout the Ramadan fasting period.

She appealed to wealthy individuals in the state to also assist the needy, as according to her, that would alleviate the suffering of the less privileged, especially during the fasting period.

One of the beneficiaries, Malama Amina Muhammad, expressed gratitude to the donor, saying the items given to her would go a long way in the upkeep of her two children.

Malama Amina appealed to wives of wealthy individuals in the state to emulate Garkuwa, as according to her, the number of people that are in need of such assistance in the state are many.

The items donated included over 150 bags of rice, 50 bags of sugar, 50 bags of millet and 100 cartons of noodles.
