The students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, have distanced themselves from alleged plans to burn down the institution if the suspended rector of the institution, Dr. Silas Gyar, was reinstated by the state government.

It had been alleged in some sections of the media recently that the students of the polytechnic were planning to burn down the institution if the state government reinstated the suspended rector of the college, Gyar who was suspended over allegations of gross abuse of office.

Speaking to journalists Thursday in Lafia, the President of the polytechnic’s Student Union Government (SUG), Japheth Magaji, said the media report of plans by students to burn down the polytechnic was false and a calculated attempt to tarnish the image of the good students of the institution.

He said: “Government has the power to decide who to work with by reinstating the suspended rector if it is satisfied with his conduct in the institution. But we as the representatives of the students, we must ensure that the welfare of the students is taken care of.

“Therefore, the SUG of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia has distanced itself from such malicious allegations as it has no any plan to resist government plan or action to bring Dr.Silas Gyar back.

“Therefore, the SUG has either no plan to close down the school in a mass protest, or ever contemplated to burn down the school as alleged in some sections of the media.”

The SUG president, however, found the allegations as very disturbing as the statement was a threat to the entire polytechnic community, even as he called on the entire students of the institution to continue with their lawful activities as the publication holds no water in all of its ramifications.
