Palpable tension yesterday pervaded Sakama area, off Niger road in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital following the reported death of a suspected cultist, Yusuf popularly known as Indomie.

THISDAY checks investigations revealed that the suspected cultist reportedly died in the early hours of yesterday from the gunshot he allegedly fired at night guards in the area, which mysteriously returned and hit him in the process.

It was learnt that Yusuf was sighted late in the night and was accosted by the guards, who suspected foul play. The deceased reportedly resurfaced from a hideout where he had been hibernating as a result of the killing of some rival cult members in some parts of Ilorin in the past.

It was gathered that the deceased had been severally remanded on court orders for murder and cult-related cases but usually found his way out of the prison custody.

A resident of Niger Area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Indomie died after the bullet he fired at the night guards, who accosted him on his late night crawling, reversed and hit him instead.

“We were told that he was coming from somewhere late in the night and was sighted by night guards, who challenged him to know where he was coming from by that time.

“In the process, an argument ensued and Indomie removed a gun and shot at the night guards but unknown to him, the bullet returned and hit him in the chest. He died instantly at the scene.

“He was a member of a notorious cult group and has been wreaking havoc in our community. We have tried in the past to put him behind bars. But to our surprise, after his arrest and arraignment in court, he would resurface again; that has always been the case here.

“His appearance in the community usually created fear in the people. Though, it is not like we are happy that he finally met his waterloo, people would be, at least, relieved of the fear of the unknown that his presence caused”, he said.

The spokesman of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi confirmed the death of the suspected cultist, adding that investigation had already commenced into the incident.
