Nigeria has been described as an exporter of raw materials and an importer of finished products; a situation which does not augur well for a country which seeks to be among the world’s top 20 economies by the year 2020.

One-time Kaduna State governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa made the remark while presenting a paper with the theme ‘Ideology, Restructuring and the Liberation of Nigeria’ at the twentieth National Delegates Conference of the Academic Staff Union of Universities held at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi yesterday.

Alhaji Musa remarked that despite the country being blessed with the world’s finest crude oil, it still depends on refined products from abroad.

According to him, “Educational system, infrastructure, health, water supply and public security among others are still suffering as a result of colonial mis-administration.”

The former governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government during his administration, Mr. Richard Musa, said Nigeria needs urgent restructuring in the areas of political power, distribution and exchange in a manner that guarantees equity and fair reward for labour among others. He disclosed that considering that the country is about fifty eight years now, its economy remains non productive and largely un-industrialised.

In a message at the event, Vice Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, Prof. Saminu Ibrahim, represented by Prof. Abdullahi Umar called for mutual understanding among Management of Universities and members of the Union for the educational development of the country.

In a welcome address, the ASUU Chairman, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi Chapter, Adamu Babayo opined that the positive contribution of members of the Union has uplifted the standard of the country’s university system.
