My Story: Sekinat Omotosho Sekies Trends is Where Emotion Meets Reality

Sekinat Omotosho Eunice is a fashion designer and stylist. She offers excellence and diligence in her services. In this chat with Tosin Clegg, she talks about her brand, influences and more

Tell us about Sekies Trend?

Sekies Trends is where emotions, feelings and a young girl’s imaginations meet reality. It is what I feel and imagine within me, translated into sketches on sheets of papers and finally brought into reality.

How did it all begin?

It has been a journey full of failure and successes, trials and applauds, discouragements and persistence. In a nutshell, it has not been easy, mostly due to the peculiarity of our society. However, I have been able to learn from my mistakes and there are still more to learn.

What kind of pieces do you do?

I do ready-to-wear and what makes the work exceptional is that they are works of my own imaginations, mostly inspired by street fashion. I have always had the urge to try something new or seek ways to improve upon what has been already done. Close attention to details and perfect finishing are the hallmarks of my designs.

Who are your role models?

Mai Atafo has been my role model for a long time. He inspires me a lot with the simplicity and uniqueness of his designs.

What’s your view about the Nigerian fashion industry?

Fashion is universal and dynamic. Therefore, the Nigerian fashion industry is also an evolving one. It is moving at the same pace with global trends. Nevertheless, I think the designers we have in Nigeria have made the business a thing for the elites, not considering the average Nigerian as a prospective client. That’s why we, at Sekies Trends, try to make our products relatively affordable. In the absence of that, we are progressing and if the government supports indigenous and locally made products the more, I think the average Nigerian entrepreneur will be equally competitive in the global sphere.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Being a strong employer of labour and seeing my designs on some of the major Nigerian/African runway events. We are going to London too, but let’s capture the immediate environment first.
