Kano Varsity Students Protest Death of Colleague

Students of Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) in Wudil Thursday protested the death of a colleague at Wudil River as a result of drowning.
The incident occurred Wednesday evening when three students of the university went for a swim and got drowned. Two of the students were rescued while the third drowned.
An eyewitness to the incident, Mr Yusuf Ibrahim, said: “Three students went for swimming and got sunk. Two of them managed to survive while the other one, Farouk Abubakar, drowned.”
The deceased was a Level 300 student of Biology in the Faculty of Education.
Yusuf said following the death of the student, his colleagues  went on the rampage vandalising the school property.
Speaking on the situation, the University Deputy Head of Information, Protocol and Public Relations Units, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, confirmed the protest by the students.

However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shehu Alhaji, appealed for calm when he visited the river to supervise the recovery of the body.

Meanwhile, Prof. Alhaji has declared Thursday, May 3 and Friday, May 4 lecture-free days in honour of the deceased student.
He added that the mid semester break is extended to two weeks and asked students to vacate the school premises.
