The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has stated the desire of the administration to revive the cultural values and norms especially by placing importance on the continuous learning of Yoruba language in schools in the state.

Speaking at the weekend in Lagos at the launch of a book titled: ‘The Last Flight’ Ambode said the revival of the cultural values was very important for the administration of the state, stressing that the values have been eroded due to Western culture.

Ambode who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs. Toyin Awoseyi, said the state government has passed a law which ensures that any individual who wants to register in any school in the state must learn how to speak Yoruba language.

He lamented that most parents are not training their kids to learn the right family values and the realities of life, while calling on parents to go back to the basis of parenting.

Continuing, Ambode added: “Most of us are not training our kids to know and understand the realities of life and family values. Parents should go back to the proper family values. A lot of our children have taken to drugs and bad vices, yet we are not concerned. The expectation is that this book will expose us to those family values we have forgotten and it will teach us to train our children better. It will also help us rediscover those things that we need to build a better family. One of the electioneering commitments of this administration is to get the youths out of the street and it has lived up that promise.” In his remarks, the author of the book, Dapo Akande, said in writing the book he realised that there was a need bring back the ideals of good morals, neighbourly love, discipline and success back to the success.

He also stated that the success which the book seeks to address was that which aims at impacting the lives of others, stating that there is need for people to be more society focused than self-focused.

Earlier in his remarks, the Book Reviewer, Prof. Kayode Makinde, said the book sheds light on exemplary leadership and family values, adding that it is a book with a special focus on honesty, “the book also sheds light on the role of mothers in the home.”
