Court Remands Businessman for Alleged Peddling of Codeine in Sokoto

A Federal High Court in Sokoto, presided over by Justice Saleh Idrissa, Wednesday remanded a 51-year-old businessman, Emeka Obi, in prison custody for allegedly peddling 5.25 kilogrammes of codeine and other unlawful substances.
The accused was charged with possession of codeine, a narcotic substance similar to cocaine which contravened section 20 (a) of NDLEA laws of the Federation Cap (30).
When the charge was read, the accused pleaded not guilty, while the prosecution counsel, Beatrice Igberaese, urged the court to remand him in prison custody.
Igberaese said the accused had been granted administrative bail and was arrested with similar unlawful substances.
Justice Idrissa, to this end, remanded the accused in prison custody and adjourned the case to May 14, 2018 for hearing.
Obi, a resident of Wamakko Local Government area of Sokoto State was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in possession of unlawful substances at Kara Market in Wamakko town on July 19, 2017.
