The Bauchi State Society for the Control of HIV /AIDS, Tuberculosis and Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (BASHIMTU), a Non-governmental organisation has trained 120 women in the state to be professional traditional birth attendants.

State Coordinator of the organisation, Hajiya Fatima Yakubu disclosed this on Saturday during the graduation ceremony of the trainees held at the Federal Secretariat, Bauchi.

According to her, the women were trained by professional midwives at various hospitals in the state, adding that the trainees would be attending to poor pregnant women who cannot afford to deliver at health facilities.

She said the NGO was established with set objectives of empowering women in the state, eradicating the spread of HIV /AIDS, saying BASHIMTU had since its inception been rehabilitating prostitutes in the state and reintegrating them into their respective families.

“We in collaboration with the state Hisbah (Islamic police) do pay unexpected visits to notorious brothels, arrest prostitutes and rehabilitate them so that they could reunite with their parents”, she noted.

Yakubu also said forms were secured to the NGO from Bank of Industry for distribution to 50 women so they would access a loan of N100,000 each to start pretty trades.
