Abia Court Orders Sealing of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture

A High Court sitting in Umuahia the Abia capital of Abia State on Tuesday

reportedly ordered the sealing of the administration block of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, for non remittance of taxes.

In a court order number Hu/MISC/3/2017 the claimant the Abia State Board of internal revenue stated that the university was dully served with the demand notice for the remittance of the sum of N120,751,998.28, but the defendant did not remit within the time limited by the demand notice.

The notice stated that if the university fails to remit the taxes within the next 14 days after sealing the premises, the claimant will sell the property
and pay the money arising from the sale to claimant.

The development paralysed administrative activities in the university as staff were seen discussing the matter in small groups.

The university spokes person Mrs. Adama Odefa confirmed the order sealing the institution.
Odefa said the university had begun negotiations with the claimant to unseal the institution’s seat of power.
