Lagos Polo: Leighton Kings Retain Oba of Lagos Cup

Lagos Leighton Kings defeated Lagos STL 8 – 4 1/2 to clinch the Oba of Lagos Cup as the first phase of the GTBank-sponsored 2018 Lagos International Polo Tournament enters the final day of action with two more titles up for grabs sunday.

The win also guaranteed the Kings formed by Bowale Jolaoso (0), Yemo Alakija (1), Martin Juaregi (4) and Juan Cruz Guebera (4) their place in the Chapel Hill and Denham-sponsored Open Cup where they will battle Lagos A Plus Bluechip who edged Lagos Twinwaters to second place in the four-team event.

In saturday’s game which had, among other dignitaries, Oba of lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu in attendance, Argentine hitman Martin Juaregi (4) was the star man scoring five of his side’s total haul while his compatriot Juan Cruz, a five-goaler, also scored twice. Yemo Alakija, with his dad among the huge crowd, got on the scoresheet in the ding minutes to kill off the faint hope of STL who were closing in at the penultimate chaukka with goals from Sadiq Dantata and Khalifa Ibrahim.

Kano BUA formed by Abdsamad Rabiu,Murtala Dankaka, Abba Dantata, Selim Dantata will confront Lagos NRT, formed by Tomi Ojora( -1),Yasin Amusan( -1) Dantala Ibrahim (2) ,Tata Ali.(2) for the Silver Cup title after the latter’s went on goalscoring spree against Lagos Aragon by 13 – 6 1/2 yesterday.

The high-margin triumph by NRT proved decisive leaving Ibadan Eleyele ruing their calaogue of missed chances in their 8-2 win over Lagos United on Friday.

Port Harcourt Stratabase were also unlucky as they missed out of the final despite getting two wins in the preliminaries following their 6 – 4 1/2 win over Lagos Lameana.

Kaduna Dattaku, who had lost their first game and are no more in contention, salvaged their pride as they defeated Lagos Anglestone 10 – 5 1/2.

Today’s programme will get underway with the Chagouri Bowl Selected Cup which will be contested by Lagos. Awolowo and Lagos Ribadu.
