NULGE Chairman Assassinated in Bayelsa

The Bayelsa State Police Command saturday confirmed the killing of the Chairman of the Southern Ijaw Council chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Mr. Okaye Igali, by suspected assassins.

The hoodlums who shot and ripped out the intestines of the deceased, aged 53, around the Ayama Ijaw junction in the local council, were said to have taken off after the act.

Igali was said to have died a few minutes after being taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, Bayelsa state.

THISDAY learnt that the deceased was in a tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep and was heading to the Ayama Ijaw jetty to board a speedboat to his council area when he was attacked by gunmen who allegedly trailed him from Yenagoa.

In a reaction, the Deputy State President, NULGE, Bayelsa State, Gowon Toruyouye, described the killing as “barbaric and unfortunate”. He called on security agencies to bring the perpetrators to book, insisting that the NULGE chair’s death must be thoroughly investigated.

Spokesman of the state police command, Mr. Asinim Butswata, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, described Igali’s killing as premeditated.

“On 9 February, 2018 at about 14.40 hrs, one Okaye Igali `m` age 53, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen, along Ayama Ijaw Road, Southern Ijaw LGA Bayelsa State.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the attack was a premeditated murder.
The incident was reported about three hours later, however, Tactical Teams have swung into action to arrest the culprits. Investigation is ongoing”, he said.
