Recently, Fashion Designer Association of Nigeria (FADAN) led by its President, Mrs. Funmi Ajila-Ladipo held a Gala/ Award Night to round up its 2017 Fashion Week. It was more than a fashion show as the hall was jam-packed with an array of celebrities and fashinonistas including the richest black woman, Mrs. Folorunso Alakija who was one of the pioneer founders of the association. Also in attendance were Sen. Daisy Danjuma, Mrs. Abah Folawiyo, first woman to have PhD in Fashion Designing, Dr. Stella Mofunnaya, Mrs. Onikepo Akande, former wife of Ooni of Ife, Queen Zaynab Obanor, Mrs. Folashade Thomas-Fahn, the walking portrait of arts, Mrs. Nike Davies-Okundaye, Bisi Olatilo, Mrs. Ireti Asemota and Badejo-Okunsanya of CMC Connect just to mention a few.
Prior to the star stunned event, there was an exhibition and a workshop which centered on youth empowerment through skills acquisition with emphasis on how the established ones can help put the upcoming ones on track to enable them see fashion as a profession rather than mere glamour.
The workshop training anchored by Oluwaseun Ayanfeoluwa x-rayed the essential tools in the fashion industry. The class session also focused on and tutored members and selected grassroots designers on how to standardize and professionalize the fashion industry.
According to Ajila-Ladipo, the theme went beyond the runaway and entertainment, as it involved a new direction in youth empowerment.
Opening the show to the delight of the audience was Mystic Couture followed by Flawless Sparkle. Emos Signature, Mega Echoes, NG Couture, Lee Look, Bismol Collection also took turns to showcase their designs. They all wowed the audience with their superlative designs.
Spicing up the evening was a presentation of African beach wear from Grace’s Hat while House of Aisha Mohammed brought her Northern Nigeria heritage to the fore front with her superlative Kaftan design of Ankara mixed with Satin.
The king of the night was ‘Kijipa” from “A Stitch in Time” collection which converted frequently tailoring items such as tape rule, tread, pins, scissors, razor blade, zip to showcase his creativity.
The night was rounded up with an award night that saw Mrs. Folorunso Alakija, Mrs. Abbah Folawiyo invested with the honours of Life Patron of the association. Queen Zynab won culture ambassador award.
In her words, Alakija thanked the association for keeping the flag flying particularly by supporting up-coming designers. She enjoined the Ajila-Ladipo led executive to work towards making FADAN known worldwide through constant innovation.
In her brief remark, FADAN founder, Thomas-Fahn called on the three tiers of government to give maximum support to the fashion industry particularly the upcoming designers as it will give hope to the unemployed. “ Aso-oke” and other national attire should be promoted as it can serve as another foreign exchange earner,” she said
