Kebbi Begins Purchase of Wheat from Farmers

  • Releases N7.5bn for pension arrears

Chairman of Wheat farmers Association in Kebbi, Alhaji Abdullahi Maigandu has said that the state government has begun the purchase of hundreds of tonnes of wheat from farmers in the state.

The chairman stated this in Birnin Kebbi while displaying some tonnes of the wheat purchased from farmers.

According to him, the move was to encourage wheat farmers in the state to embark on large scale production of the crop for the state to supersede its second position and become the highest producing state in Nigeria.

“At this level, 400 tonnes of wheat have already been purchased at N15, 000 per bag .

Maigwandu assured farmers that with the assistance of state government in accessing loans and other incentives, “It is our hope that farmers will utilise this opportunity to cultivate wheat on the over 600,000 hectares of Fadama land in the state.”

The Chairman charged government to ensure sustainability of the scheme by securing the release of funds to the association from the federal government for Fadama project.
Kebbi state governor Atiku Bagudu represented by the Speaker of State House of Assembly, Alhahi Abdulmumin Kamba assured farmers of the state’s government continuous support to meet the target.
Meanwhile, Kebbi state released N7.5billion for the payment of gratuities and pension arrears to retired civil servants in the state since inception.

Dan-gwari, who disclosed this to journalists in Birnin Kebbi, said the money was released for the payment.

“We believe Gov. Abubakar Bagudu will fulfill his promise by paying the outstanding gratuities and pension arrears.

“Pensioners in the state have been receiving their entitlements regularly; our union appreciates the effort of the governor by putting smiles on our faces,” he said.

He appealed to Bagudu to review upward the pension being paid to retirees to reflect the current salary structure for civil servants in the state.

He thanked the governor for the concern and sympathy to the pensioners and their families.
