Youths Protest Throws Minna into Blackout

By Laleye Dipo in Minna

A protest by some youths in Minna, Niger State over the epileptic power supply in the town has further worsen the power situation in the state capital and adjoining towns.

The blackout in the state capital entered its second day on Tuesday after the youths sacked officials of the Abuja Electricity Development Company (AEDC) from their operation posts when the one month ultimatum given the organisation to improve its services lapsed.

Their action was also said to have been informed by the electrocution of a woman and her son in the Maitunbi area of Minna after the AEDC officials refused to fix the problem.

During the protest, the youths reportedly locked all the offices including the main entrance to the transmission station with padlocks and went away with the keys.

The youths also compelled the AEDC officials to sit with them for negotiation on how the organisation would stabilise the power situation in the state.
