As the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party got underway in Abuja, the party said it had succeeded in surmounting difficulties on its way.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, said his committee had been able to navigate through difficult times to be able get to the current stage.

“We have laid a foundation for the effort at rebuilding the party.” he said.

On the issue of reconciliation, he said the party had succeeded in getting everyone to make sacrifices.

“We have achieved substantial reconciliation in some of the states where there have been protracted intra party crisis,” he said.

He advised the incoming leadership to focus on ways to encourage women and youth participation in the affairs of the party.

Makarfi cautioned against indulging in propaganda as a way of promoting the cause of the opposition as was done against PDP government by the then opposition party, APC.

Meanwhile, Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has moved a motion for the amendment of the party’s constitution, saying “I rise to move a motion that constitution be further amended in the following manner.

“National vice chairmen to become members of NEC and to create offices of two deputy national chairmen.”
