The Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers has charged communities in the state to make protection of government property and other facilities in their areas a top priority concern.
The royal fathers made the call in a six-point communiqué issued at the end of the Traditional Rulers meeting held in Asaba, the state capital.
Delivering the communiqué, the chairman of the council and Obi of Owa, HRM (Dr.) Emmanuel Efeizomor II, decried the incessant destruction of public facilities like water pipelines, stealing of generating sets and vandalising of other critical government infrastructure across communities in the state.
The willful destruction of public infrastructure by vandals would henceforth attract severe sanctions, they warned, saying they would not encourage them to replace such damaged facilities replaced by the government.
The state council of traditional rulers also announced a new set of etiquette designed to regulate the conduct of members, which was adopted at the meeting.
The primary objective of the new code of conduct which took effect from November 30, 2017 is to ensure that Traditional Rulers in Delta State conduct themselves with the highest degree of decorum and dignity befitting of their status as Traditional Rulers of their different kingdoms.
Nonetheless, the council urged members to abide by the details of the code in the collective interest of the traditional institution, urging them to shun all forms of partisanship especially as the January 6, 2018 local government election is fast approaching and avoid being ridiculed by politicians and the revered traditional institution derogated.
They, however, appealed to politicians to play the game according to the rule, advising them “to refrain from unguarded utterances and hate speeches capable of inciting one party against another for selfish political motives.â€
They commended the efforts of the State Government to streamline the activities of community-based youth associations in the state, saying that youths should be encouraged to engage in productive ventures.
The traditional rulers also harped on the need for youths to shun criminal tendencies and avoid being used as agents of extortion, saying that the regularisation of Youth Association has reduced the incidence of multiple youth groups in communities in the state.
Earlier in a presentation at the meeting the President-General of the Delta State Community Youth Associations, Mr. Ifeanyi Eboigbe, solicited the support of Council in promoting a healthy relationship among youths in the state.
