Katsina to Introduce Animal Tracking Technology for Livestock Breeders

The Katsina state government is to engage a private firm that will introduce cattle tracking technology to guard against cattle rustling in the state.

At a meeting with Governor Aminu Bello Masari at the Government House in Katsina, the Chief Executive of the company, Mr. Emilio Sapina, said the company is ready to partner the state government in its efforts to provide security for pastoralists.

He said once a tracking chip is installed below the skin of a cow, the animal could be tracked whenever it is stolen or goes missing. He said the technology minimises loses for livestock farmers and will prove valuable in states that suffer the menace of cattle rustling.

In his remarks, Governor Masari expressed the state government’s readiness to partner the Spanish company, noting that it will make government’s amnesty programme for cattle rustlers mire effective.
He said the state government would organise sensitisation programmes for pastoralists in the state to enlighten them on the new technology, in a statement issued and signed by the DG, Katsina Media and Publicity, Ibrahim Muazzam Abdullahi.

Governor Masari explained that government would reach out to the national and state leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association to communicate to their members about the new animal tracking technology.
