The media was awash last week with the story of a certain Samuel Rowland; a fake private tutored turned-pastor who manipulated his victims under the pretense of coaching them.
Until the bubble burst, Rowland paraded himself as a pastor who operated a private tutorial centre where: boys and girls were purportedly groomed. However, it came to light after his arrest that he actually manipulated, extorted, raped and even trafficked some of his victims.
His game was up when a parent of one of the victims reported the case to the officers of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), that swung into action and arrested him with a promise to hand him over to the police and National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for prosecution. About 10 youths were rescued during the raid.
This calls to mind some of the phony advertisements for ‘vacancies’ which I see pasted on walls on a daily basis. Many of such vacancies appear without any address or detailed information about the recruiting organization. You’d often see “work in a milk factory, 60k a monthâ€, then a phone number to call if interested.
NAPTIP has relentlessly been trying to sensitize young people about the existence of many wolves parading as sheep. They paint beautiful pictures of a good job; in and outside the country and when they entrap their victims, it only takes the grace of God to get off in one piece.
Now that the yuletide is approaching, crime will increase and more wolves will be on the prowl. We must be on the lookout so that we do not fall victims.
World aids day
Friday, December 1, the world marked the ‘World Aids Day; a day set aside by World Health Organisation (WHO) to campaign against the spread of the dreaded HIV AIDS. It is also a time to honour those who have lost their lives to the disease, and support those living with it while celebrating their caregivers, families, friends and support groups. This celebration is observed the world over, every 1st of December. The theme for this year’s celebration: Increasing Impact Through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships, buttresses the commitment of stakeholders to the war against the disease.
