Buhari Receives ECOWAS Chairman, Advocates Constitutional Resolution of Liberian Political Crisis

President Muhammadu Buhari thursday in Abuja, said the current political stalemate in Liberia would be resolved constitutionally and hence, appealed to all concerned parties to patiently await Supreme Court verdict.

Buhari who made the remark while receiving Togolese President, Faure Gnassingbe, according to a statement by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, said he was hopeful that the outcome of the country’s Supreme Court verdict would be acceptable to all, and consequently engender a peaceful transfer of power.

The statement also said the president told the ECOWAS Chairman that the leading political actors in Guinea Bissau need to agree to a resolution and transition arrangement that will pave way for elections in the country in 2018.
According to the statement, the ECOWAS Chairman said his visit to Buhari was spurred by a number of challenges facing the West African region with a view to securing his counsel on the best way to resolve the issues.

“Gnassingbe said they reviewed the political situations in Liberia, Guinea Bissau and Togo, and also talked about the ongoing reform in ECOWAS.

“He said they were both satisfied with the progress made so far in implementing the reform in the regional body, expressing support for the rules and regulations endorsed by the ECOWAS Council of Ministers as guide for the selection of leaders of the ECOWAS Commission.

“The ECOWAS Chairman said the institution’s Heads of State meeting will be held in Abuja in December,” the statement added.
