A chieftain and one of the national chairmanship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has expressed confidence that he would clinch it at the December 9, 2017, National Convention of the PDP, saying he has the advantage of experience needed to successfully run the affairs of the party.

Fielding questions from journalists on his visit to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State at the Government House Asaba in continuation of his nation-wide tour to woo delegates to the convention for the party’s exalted position, George noted that what the PDP needed at this point in time was experienced hands as helmsman, saying his experience and wide reach across the country brightened his chances.

George said he was in the state to solicit for support of party delegates for the forthcoming elections at the party national convention, stressing that the party needed to ensure a free, fair and transparent electoral process so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

The chairmanship aspirant, however, played down on the perceived lingering differences in the party, asserting that “there is no crisis in the party” rather what observers termed crisis in the party was merely “family feud.”
Reacting to the suggestion by Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State for pruning the number of aspirants especially for the South-west zone, George observed: “It is normal as the D-Day draws closer that there would be a cacophony of voices; but the voice of reason which experience provides would prevail, and the delegates would eventually decide.”

In the same vein, Okowa expressed the hope that leaders and stakeholders of the PDP would work towards ensuring that “the national convention is conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner” in order to stabilise and move the party forward.

While commending the chairmanship hopeful for going round the country to solicit for support, Okowa said he believed in the ability of the party to hold a successful convention that would produce the right officers for the party.

According the governor, “We are a much organised political party, we believe that the process of choosing our officers at the national convention will be free, fair and transparent, everyone has to ensure that it is a fair process to move the party forward,” he said.

He described the array of credible and reputable persons vying for different positions as a sign of democracy and a wake-up call to all party members, stressing that it gave credence to the fact that the PDP is the leading party in the country.
