The University of Lagos Alumni Association has promised to rebuild the Moremi Cab Shuttle Park and shops at the institution. The National President of the association, Dr. Sunny Kuku, said this at the turning of the sod ceremony for the redevelopment of the park and shops at the university, as the five-year tenure of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rahman Ade Bello elapses.
Revealing the association’s plans to turn the park to an ultra-modern facility, Kuku said the essence of the event was to help develop the community and to fund some projects at the university.
He said the park, which is the centre of all education activities, has become dilapidated, adding that the association would rebuild it in the name of Professor Rahman Bello, who is retiring and leaving office. “He has been a wonderful vice-chancellor and we thought we should promote it with his name.â€
The medical doctor said the infrastructure decay was a disgrace to the association. “As an alumni association, we don’t want to visit the university and say this is the university from where we graduated and looking turn apart. So what we come to do is to keep the reputation, the infrastructure we built so that when we come in, we would be proud.â€
He said the project was worth N40 million and is a joint development venture between the association and Zenith Bank Plc.
In his response, Bello said: “Our dream for this place is becoming a reality. As you said, just like cities are renewed, we need to begin to renew the university environment and it starts from the cleaning of the environment and edges. Now the structures need to be renewed.
“So I feel very elated that our plan, which was put up as the VC, will now be realised as I leave office. One of the challenges we faced was funding. The University of Lagos is a city and not just a university. Between five to to 10,000 people visit the university daily.
“It is a big place to really run and I am happy that we are able to put things in place and things are moving on very well.â€
