Last Saturday, former Rivers State Governor and Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, and the incumbent governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, had a public spar in what could be considered a precursor to the 2019 engagements. The sparring was however not done in persons.
Amaechi’s convoy was reportedly accosted at an intersection called Trans Amadi in Port Harcourt, Rivers State by an outrider belonging to the governor’s full convoy, which was about four hundred meters away, according to the police. But the governor was the first to hit the airwaves to allege assassination attempt on his life. Amaechi, in his account, alleged similar move and the public show continued by proxy.
Although the police, which earlier arrested some of the officers in the convoy of the governor for allegedly molesting one of their own, later came out after investigation to dismiss the claims of assassination by Wike and Amaechi.
They also dispelled as untrue, some of the narratives dished out from both sides. The encounter between the convoys of the two public figures is alarming and a clear reflection of the adversarial politics that had been on since the 2015 governorship election in the state.
