The Nigeria Customs Service(NCS) Sokoto Command, comprising Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara states, has intercepted 340 bales of second hand clothes with a duty paid value of N17 million.
The Customs Area Controller of the Command, Mr. Nasir Ahmed, made the disclosure to newsmen in Sokoto, yesterday.
Ahmed disclosed that the seizure was made on Monday along Aliero-Tambuwal road in the state.
He said the items recovered in the truck were mainly second hand clothes for children and women.
The controller disclosed that the contrabands were intercepted following intelligence reports from Kebbi State.
“As you are aware, we got intelligence reports about these smugglers in Kebbi state and we have been monitoring them for the past two months.
“It took us time to impound the items because we have been following them right from Birnin Kebbi where they kept these illegal goods. “So, the second hand clothes were intercepted close to Tambuwal council in the wee hours of Monday. They have so many routes they use in smuggling contraband, especially second hand clothes and the final destination is Kaduna and Plateau state,” he said.
He further said investigation was ongoing and that no arrest had been made so far.
Ahmed appealed to traditional and community leaders in the border communities to continue to provide useful information to the command on the movement of smugglers in their areas.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Command towards tackling smuggling activities in the zone.
“We are not relenting and will keep on going after the smugglers because that is what we are trained to do,” Ahmed added.
