Graduates should not only be employable, but entrepreneurial – Obaseki

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said his administration is pursuing a holistic plan to reposition state-run tertiary institutions in the state to enable them produce graduates who will not only be employable but self-reliant.

Obaseki stated this when he received the report from the committee of Enquiry on the Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, at Government House, in Benin City.

Obaseki described as worrisome the situation where graduates are not exposed to the right training to make them either entrepreneurs or suitable for the demands of the modern-day labour market.

He said that his administration will ensure that every state-run institution achieves the aim for which it was established, noting, “We do need a state-owned Polytechnic in Edo, but it should function the way it ought to. We need to have the right people and the requisite faculties to deliver quality education so that our children will have the right training.”

The governor said he would rather the Polytechnic serve as a Regional Centre for Physical and Urban Planning to drive his administration’s urban planning initiatives and policies.

He commended the committee for the thorough work done, assuring that the state government will examine the report and come up with its decisions in two weeks’ time.

He also assured workers of the Edo Polytechnic that would get their salaries before Christmas this year.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Prof.  Rose Egonmwan, said the committee was inaugurated 0n August 10 with a mandate to investigate the management of Edo Polytechnic, Usen.

She said the seven-man committee inspected facilities at the institution as well as interacted with staff before it came up with the report.
