The Director of the Department of Petroleum Resources, (DPR), Mr. Mordecai Ladan, has stated that process safety implementation in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry has witnessed relative compliance, when compared with the downstream sector.
He disclosed this recently at the Process Safety Seminar 2017 organised by the Nigeria Society of Chemical Engineers (NSCHE) in collaboration with the DPR with the theme: ‘Deepening Process Safety Understanding and Practice in the Oil and Gas and Process Industry Sectors in Nigeria.’
He explained that process safety is an integral part of operation in DPR’s facilities and in the sector as a whole.
The DPR Director called for increased safety measures in the handling and maintenance of oil and gas facilities to promote efficiency in the sector.
Represented at the conference by the Head of Safety, Health and Environment, Mrs. Cordelia Sibeudu, Ladan stated that the increasing trends in establishment of new facilities in the upstream and downstream sectors of the industry pose major challenges in Lagos State.
He noted that the major focus of the sector is to ensure optimal production and distribution of crude oil and petroleum products in a safe and orderly manner using a healthy workforce.
The DRP Director stressed that by pursuing the policy of optimal production of crude oil, the industry is better positioned to generate the much needed revenue for government and create jobs.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Vita Foam Plc, Dr. Bamidele Makanjuola, called on industry players to take the issue of safety serious, stressing the need to invest to safety management practices.
