Inoculation Rumour: Confusion as Parents Withdraw Wards from Schools in Ondo

By James Sowole in Akure

There was confusion on Tuesday in several towns in Ondo State as parents and guardians stormed both primary and secondary schools to withdraw their wards when rumours went round that soldiers were going round schools to vaccinate pupils against killer diseases.

The action of the panic-stricken parents and guardians created panic in Owo, Ikare, Idanre, Ore, Akure and other cities as parents and guardians including market women were seen running helter skelter  towards the schools to withdraw their wards.

At several schools visited by THISDAY in Akure, the parents and school officials engaged one other in war of words as school officials locked their gates against the parents who came apparently to withdraw their wards.

At Irekari Primary School on Adinlewa Street, Akure, some parents scaled the school fence out of desperation to withdraw their children.

The situation forced the police and army authorities to deploy men and officers to several towns looking for those visiting schools to administer vaccines.
