Anticipating Another Ika Carnival

The annual Ika carnival in Delta State promises to consolidate on the gains of previous editions with plans for a much bigger event in December.

Speaking on preparations for its third edition coming up in Agbor, Mr. Steve Aderemi, Managing Director, Astol Communication, said that the Ika Carnival, which is a unique display of the people’s heritage showcased through music, dance, drama and visual creativity will again be reflected through floats, costumes and make-up.

The 19 day carnival is the second longest after the Calabar carnival. “Despite the fun and relaxed atmosphere around the Ika Carnival, a great degree of thought, creativity and discipline goes into the interpretation of the event.”

Aderemi added that over 200,000 people attended last year which he said “contributed greatly to the social and economic life of the people.”

He promised that despite the standards set last year – with star studded participation from J.Martins, Oritse Femi, Whizboy, Joe Morgan, and many others – this year will be a lot bigger, with collaborations expected to be divulged in coming weeks.
The Ika Carnival will be spiced with a cultural exhibition, beauty pageant, youth talent hunt, cultural dance, business empowerment events, comedy night and many more.

Seeking the support of the state government and private sector contributions to the staging of the carnival, Aderemi said that the carnival has put a stop to youth violence during the festive season in the area as they have been given the platform to showcase their talents.
