HAJIA MARYAM TAMBUWAL’s LOVE FOR PEACE

Call her a lover of peace and you won’t be wrong.

Since providence brought her to the limelight as the incumbent Sokoto  State First Lady, Hajia  Maryam Tambuwal, has left no one in doubt about her love for humanity.

Therefore,  it was not surprising when she led a powerful delegation,  raised by the wife of the President,  Mrs. Aisha Buhari,  to the 3rd Annual Commemoration of the World Alliance of Religions’ Peace (WARP) Summit held between September 17 and 19 in Seoul, Republic of South Korea.

For Nigeria,  the summit couldn’t have come at a more auspicious time considering government effort to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency in the northern part of the country.

The mission of the delegation led by the founder of of MMAWT Legacy Initiative was to discuss plans of action to raise public awareness and enhance the role of women in promoting a culture of peace through cooperation with women leaders and female organisations.

The WARP summit, which debuted in 2014, brings together political and religious leaders, heads of women’s and youth groups, civil societies, and the press from around the world and provides a platform for discussion and cooperation for peace.

The annual event is organised by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), a non-governmental organisation under the United Nations Department of Public Information, in association with International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG).

In her address during one of the sessions chaired by IWPG Africa Desk Director Nancy Roussopoulos, the First Lady noted that this year’s event aimed to establish collaborative synergy between governments and civil society groups with a view to developing education, religious and ethnic tolerance, a culture of peace as well as fostering harmony amongst religion.

She also described the slogan of this year’s event, ‘Together For Peace As Messenger of Peace’, as being apt and timely.

She also urged the participants to reflect on and discourage the issue of hate speech and bullying at all levels, as these twin evils have been credited on many occasions with igniting violence and war.

During the various sessions, the violence and uprisings bedeviling nations like Nigeria, Sudan, Burma, Middle East and several troubled regions were highlighted.

The summit also discussed the efforts being made through policy agitation to curb uprisings that could lead to war and have led to war in the past.

Among others, Hajia  Binta  Muazu,  an APC stalwart,  the First Lady’s Future Assured team, some Nigerian clerics and bodies, NGOs, educationists, policy makers and some government officials from Nigeria were in attendance at the event.
