Bella: How I Make Nigerian Music

Bella is the First Lady of Tinny Entertainment Africa; same label Ycee is signed on. In this chat with Tosin Clegg, she talks about her career

Tells us a bit about you?

I’m Bella, First Lady Tinny Entertainment Africa. My birth name is Mabel Oine Alubo. I’m the last child of four children born to a Professor and a school proprietress in Jos, Plateau State. My latest single is called Radio and features my label mate, Ycee.

What kind of music do you play and how long have you been in the industry?

I make Nigerian music with a fresh twist. People have described my music as “new wave” or “new school”. My sound is a fusion of Afro pop, Hip Hop and R&B. With how much cultures are being traded across the world, I believe the new age Africans want to see something fresh and different; and foreigners want to have a feel of the African sound.

Who are your role models?

So many artistes have influenced me in one way or another from my early years till now. DMX, Daddy Showkey, Brandy, Brenda Fasie, Plantashun Boiz, Mocheddah, Westlife, M.I, Rihanna, Drake, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Kanye West and Angel Haze are some of them.

Where do you see yourself in a few years?

I see myself being an example to young people; young Nigerian girls especially. I see myself showing people that they can be whatever they set their minds to. My second single under Tinny Entertainment will be out soon and from then on I see awards, topping charts, a bigger brand and general succes
