As Police Score Another Goal…

Last week, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, said newly recruited police officers would be posted out to their states of origin as part of new measures to live the dreams of effective policing in the remotest parts of the country. That was good thinking, although not without its shortcomings.

The idea of multi-level policing otherwise called state police aligns with the need to ensure the posting out of police officers to the terrain they are familiar with. This, it is often contended, would allow them to effectively contain crime and police the environment professionally without undue emotionality. That process, the police have begun with this pronouncement.

But the police leadership must ensure that by the time the idea is fully translated into action, officers do not pander to misplaced ethnic sentiments but do their job conscientiously with the sole aim of upholding the very essence of the initiative. It is an idea that would help see a better policing in terms of crime-fighting and prevention, given the officers’ good knowledge of their respective terrains of posting.
