Melaye Evades INEC’s Recall Notice

Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday stormed the Senate wing of the National Assembly armed with a Notice of Recall for Senator Dino Melaye, the lawmaker representing Kogi West senatorial district.

The INEC officials arrived at the complex at about 11a.m. just as lawmakers resumed from their two months holiday to a closed door session.

INEC officials went straight to the office of Melaye but the door was locked.
They then spread themselves in different strategic areas in and out of the upper legislative chamber in an attempt to  ambush Melaye.

Melaye was later sighted a few minute after talking to his aides outside of the chamber.
THISDAY gathered that the senator later left his office and drove away immediately he was informed of the plan by INEC to serve the recall notice at the office.

The officials who said they were under specific instructions to deliver the notice directly to the lawmaker, left the heap of documents they came with at the senator’s office door after they failed to trace his whereabouts.

The embattled Melaye had last Monday told journalists that the period of 90 days given to INEC to conduct the exercise has expired.
The lawmaker said with the expiration, what INEC plans to do is unconstitutional which he would not be a part of.
