The Vice-Chancellor, Al-Hikma University, Ilorin, Kwara State, Prof. Taofiq Ibrahim, has canvassed for the running of the National Assembly on part-time basis so as to reduce the cost of governance.

Ibrahim, who made the submission in Ilorin while speaking with journalists on the forthcoming 7th convocation ceremony of the institution, said that the development also became imperative in view of the concern of the generality of Nigerians that their salaries and allowances are on the high side.

He said: “The exorbitant running of Nigeria’s government should not continue at the peril of its citizenry, massive poverty and the country’s under-development. Nothing is more responsible for our mis-management and maladministration other than corruption.

“I necessarily wish to support the recent view of a very successful businessman and strongly so, that our National Assembly should be run on part-time basis. Members should come from their various businesses or public sector, it should not be for people without jobs who have nothing doing and want to make easy money out of government and governance.”

Ibrahim stated further that it was high time the nation’s universities and academics move out of research and publications for more evidence of the prowess in scientific and literary writing.
