Ekwempu Wins LCC Tennis Festival

Ndubuisi Ekwempu saved six match points for a 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 win over Bimbo Okubena to win the men’s singles title at the 2017 Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival which ended on Saturday.

Okubena, a former number one player on the club was the first to break for 4-2 in the event partnered by 9Mobile, but Ekwempu, who defeated defending champion Matt Holmes in the semi-finals broke back in the seventh game before dragging the set to tie break which he won 7-3.
Hard-hitting Okubena won the second set convincingly 6-1 and was 40-0, 5-4 up in the final set but he failed to seal the match as Ekwempu won in another tie break.

“I was never nervous because I know I have a big head-to-head win against him,” Ekwempu said of his comeback.

Tunji Adeyinka won the men’s Group B by beating Dapo Adebayo while Antonia Trombi and Lola Aluko defeated Eniola Oshiga and Tosin Oshikoya in the women’s doubles final while the men’s doubles final was postponed.

Chairman of the tennis section Onubogu Arinze lauded 9Mobile for partnering the tournament which he said has helped, among others, in deepening friendship ties of members.
